This unit has been tested during 3 years of development and functions as described in the following pages. Best performance will be realized during the winter half of the year, due to colder incoming airflow. It has been tested down to -50F on the cool side and up to +450F on the hot side, with efficiency up to 10%.

This unit TEG 1, was made specifically for a wood burning stove, but functions fine together with other  heat sources. It is also made to function primarily in cold climates, were the necessity of a continuous burning heat source, will then provide continuous electricity of low voltage, in this case 12 volt. 

The success of this unit is due to intake of cooling air from the outside of the house.  Other cooling techniques can be experimented with, water cooling being one option.The idea is to develop as big of a “difference” as possible between the HOT and COLD sides. This is called “Delta T.” and is a dynamic entity, in that it varies with the incoming heat and cooling air.

In assembly, it is very important to get as high “R” value as possible between the hot and cold sides.  Foam of some kind would be ideal, but it’s hard to find some that can stand the high temperatures, so in our original construction we used a combination of different materials.

As the “hot” side can reach temperatures up to 500°F. It’s important that the insulation that is used (like bubble foil) do not touch that side.

In our working units we are currently using, in order.....


Chimney-fabric: a high temp. resistive material used among other things for tent-chimneys


F-blanket is a “Gold fiber” used inside stoves for insulation.


Bubble-foil: a plastic bubblecell material commonly used for packing material, but with metal foil on both sides.


The performance of the unit depends on how high Delta T. that can be achieved. It is the difference between the hot and cold sides. It also depends on how much heat that is available and incoming air temperature

At Delta T= 130°F  (Hot side at 210°F, cold 80°F)

1 series group of 8 gives about 0.7Amp of charge at 12v.

2 series groups of 8 in parallel gives 1.4Amp. of charge at 12 volts.

3 series groups of 8 in parallel gives 2.2Amp. of charge at 12 volts and so on

Efficiency is low only 2-3 % but increases with higher Delta T.

The performance chart to the left show a *8-unit* T.E.G.      It shows a typical starting point of charging, at about 70°F.

Delta T;s up to 200°F can be expected during free-flow cooling. Higher can be achieved with fan cooling. And higher R-value between the hot and cold sides will give higher Delta T.

In 12 volt operation, units can be parallel-connected, in pairs of 8. In other words, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64..... for more power.

Charging starts at about a Delta T. of 70°F

Can I use a T.E.G. ?

What you need to know is :

1. Do you have a suitable heat source ?

   It has to be a large enough area, and it has to have a high enough surface temperature.      At least 250°F and up to 500°F . But no higher. Many wood stoves will work fine on        the firebox side. This can be tested with a surface thermometer.

2. You will lose “heat” from that side of the stove !

3. What power requirements do you have ?

   On a single unit of 8 , you can expect 0.4-1 Amp of charge, depending on Delta T.

4. You need a battery to charge....

   The units can be configured for “any” voltage requirements. For 12 volts you need            8-units, you can get by with 7 or even fewer units in series, but your Delta T stating          point for charge will be higher.

5. What kind of life expectancy does a unit have ?

   It should last in excess of 200.000 hours, if kept within the safe temperature limits.           In other words, below manufactures safety limits for the hot side 450-500°F

6. Moisture must be kept out of the unit.

7. Cost:

   The Peltier units run about $ 25.00 apiece, so the smallest unit that can be assembled       for charge in a 12 volt system is 8 times that , $ 200.00 + your hot plates and                     hardware . Altogether a unit can be put together for about $ 400.00

8. A thermometer is recommended for both hot and cold sides.
